Berlin, November 1st, 2021 – The new Vice President of the German Medical Association is Dr. Günther Matheis. The 125th German Medical Association elected the 63-year-old as the successor to Dr. Heidrun grid, who died last March after a serious illness.

“I am firmly convinced that we doctors from clinics, practices and other areas of health care can only be strong if we work together. We have fought the pandemic together over the past year and a half – and we still do it every day,” said Matheis in his introductory speech. He emphasized that during his term of office, he wanted to focus on topics for the entire medical profession nationwide and to work for a future-proof and crisis-proof healthcare system.

The specialist in thoracic surgery has been working as the head of the thoracic surgery section at the hospital of the Barmherzigen Brüder in Trier since 2006. Matheis has been President of the Rhineland-Palatinate Medical Association since 2016 and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the German Medical Association since then. There he is involved, among other things, as chairman of the permanent conference “Further Education” and as a representative of the German Medical Association for the nationwide transplant committees and as a representative for people with disabilities.

The 125th German Medical Congress will take place from November 1st to 2nd, 2021 as a hybrid event in Berlin. Journalists can access the live stream of the plenary sessions, press releases, press photos and other media information in our online press center: www.baek.de/pressezentrum
