When a newcomer is losing ground: VfL Bochum didn’t have much to order from Borussia Mönchengladbach for a long time on late Sunday afternoon. The team from Niederrhein won 2-1 (2-0).
Alassane Plea (12th) and Jonas Hofmann (40th) scored the goals for a long superior Gladbach team. Danny Blum scored the Bochum goal in the 86th minute with a directly converted free kick. With this success and now 14 points, the Gladbachers climbed into the middle of the table. The VfL must gradually orient itself downwards: He is at ten points from ten games played so far.
Promoted Bochum had recently conceded two league games in a row without conceding a goal. One 1-0 in Fürth was a 2-0 against Frankfurt followed. Accordingly, the Ruhrstadt residents were able to compete in Mönchengladbach with confidence. They did that too – with a well-defined defensive tactic: you locked yourself up in your own half, and let Gladbach come. But the Bochum game plan was quickly thrown overboard. Because Gladbach is not Fürth or Frankfurt, but can bring an offensive formation that at least lasts FC Bayern swept away 5-0 in the DFB Cup would have.
Plea comes and scores 1-0
Borussia coach Adi Hütter had made a change in the starting line-up compared to this game: Plea started from the beginning. Not a bad idea, because this Plea scored early to make it 1-0. The Bochum team calmly let Gladbach’s Joe Scally cross out of the half-field on their left defensive side and did not mark Plea in the center either. The French thanked him and placed his header from eight meters in the left corner – 1-0 (12th).
Bochum answered hesitantly, seemed impressed. Gerrit Holtmann and Takuma Asano had two half-chances, but the next big thing was again for Borussia: In the 18th minute there was a lot of space to counterattack, Breel Embolo had free rein. However, the Swiss played an unclean pass to the Plea that was running, so that Bochum’s Anthony Losilla was able to save with a risk tackle in his own 16er.
2-0 – Bochum without resistance
The 2-0 still fell in the first section – because Bochum did not go to work with enough grip. In the 40th minute, both preparer Plea and goal scorer Hofmann were able to score a goal almost without any distress: Plea played Hofmann flat in the 16er, who took the ball and slammed it into the far corner from eight meters.
You had the feeling: that was actually it in this game. The Gladbachers stayed in control for almost the entire second 45 minutes without really throwing everything into the balance.
Gladbach sovereign for a long time – until Blum hits
Bochum was hardly dangerous for a long time, only the agile Asano remained a factor. After Borussia goalkeeper Yann Sommer had blocked his 16-meter shot in the 71st minute, Vassilios Lampropoulos headed the following corner at the Gladbach outer post.
Drama in the final phase
It looked as if this game was coming to an end when Blum still had a flash of inspiration. He pocketed a free kick from 20 meters at a right angle to make it 2-1. Suddenly it got even more dramatic. Bochum threw everything forward, Gladbach wobbled. And if Milos Pantovic had used his chance from an acute angle in stoppage time, this game would actually have ended in a draw.
Borussia Monchengladbach opens the 11th matchday on Friday evening (05.11.2021) away from 1. FSV Mainz 05. Of the VfL Bochum has a day longer off and is then challenged in the home game against TSG Hoffenheim.
