Football Bundesliga: Augsburg wrestles Stuttgart down

Status: October 31, 2021 6:25 p.m.

After an early deficit, FC Augsburg faced the next bankruptcy against VfB Stuttgart. But the guys from coach Markus Weinzierl straightened up. And in the end they won a clear 4: 1 (1: 1) victory.

The goals for Augsburg were marked by Reece Oxford (30th), Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (52nd), Florian Niederlechner (72nd) and Alfred Finnbogason (81st) in front of 17,500 spectators. Chris Führich had previously shot VfB in the front after just seven minutes.

FC Augsburg, which is undoubtedly ailing mentally – had a devastating start to the season with only six points from the first nine games – first had to fight off the really brisk offensive game of VfB Stuttgart in their own stadium. The Swabians started like the fire brigade and quickly scored 0: 1. The very agile Führich pulled in from the right flank and slammed the ball into the right corner in the 7th minute from 17 meters with a nice left-footed shot. Unsustainable for Augsburg goalkeeper Rafael Gikiewicz.

Stuttgart has to change early

Augsburg’s fans saw something bad coming again, but their team slowly recovered. Which also had to do with the fact that VfB, already plagued by many injuries, subsequently had to replace two players who were injured. First goal scorer Führich left the field with pain in his right ankle (22nd minute), then defender Marc Oliver Kempf was hit. Muscle problems in the thigh made it impossible to continue playing (39th).

Oxford hits in the head – again

At this point it was already 1: 1 because Augsburg’s current “life insurance” had struck again: Oxford had risen higher than anyone else in the 30th minute at an Augsburg corner and had balanced the ball into the net. Oxford had already scored the equalizer in the last home game against Bielefeld (1: 1).

After the break, the FCA proved once again how important standard situations are in today’s football. Again there was a corner kick for the FCA and again the hosts were more determined in front of the goal. This time it was defense chief Gouweleeuw who headed the ball over the line from six meters (52nd). 2: 1. It was a “mentality hit”, because the Stuttgart defenders also had the opportunity to clear the ball, but failed due to Gouweleeuw’s massive physical effort.

Niederlechner makes the preliminary decision

A little later, Alfred Finnbogason had a huge chance to increase to 3: 1: André Hahn took Andi Zeqiri with him in the 64th minute after a strong solo on the left. But Finnbogason could not accommodate his fine cross pass in the VfB housing because he waited too long – Stuttgart’s Clinton Mola was still able to block.

What Augsburg’s Icelander missed, Niederlechner made up a little later: Again, Augsburg showed himself more grippy than his opponents in the fight for the ball in front of the Stuttgart housing and slammed the ball into the short corner in the 72nd minute after a confusing scene in the six-yard area – 3: 1.

Finnbogason is allowed to do it again

It was the decision in a game that the FCA deservedly pulled in its direction in the second section with an enormous fighting performance. And Finnbogason was happy that he was allowed to play again in the 81st minute. 17 meters from the goal he had a clear shot and hit the far corner to make it 4-1.

Of the FC Augsburg is in action in the Bundesliga at VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday (November 6th, 2021). At the same time the VfB Stuttgart Arminia Bielefeld.
