Four people were killed and 11 others injured Friday when a pickup truck carrying 15 immigrants overturned on a west Texas highway, authorities said.
The accident was reported around 5:30 a.m. Friday on Texas Highway 54, near the Blue Origin rocket launch site, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of El Paso, according to the U.S. Department of Public Safety Texas. There were no other vehicles involved, Lt. Elizabeth Carter said.
Six of the van’s occupants were airlifted to El Paso University Medical Center, where a spokeswoman said three of them were in critical condition. Other occupants were taken by ambulance to local hospitals, Carter added. The spokeswoman was unaware of her condition and the fate of the driver.
The immigrants appeared to be from Guatemala, Carter noted. The accident is still being investigated.
