Corona pandemic: incidence is now 139.2

Status: 10/29/2021 9:38 a.m.

The RKI has reported 24,668 new corona cases. The seven-day incidence increased from 130.2 to 139.2. The consequences can be felt in the intensive care units. The RKI therefore warns of the increased risk of infection.

The nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections has again increased significantly. As the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced, citing data from the health authorities, the value increased to 139.2. The day before it was 130.2, a week ago it was 95.1. The value indicates the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days.

According to the latest information from the RKI, 24,668 new coronavirus infections and 121 new deaths related to the virus were recorded within 24 hours. The total number of registered cases of infection in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic has grown to 4,559,120, the total number of recorded deaths in connection with a corona infection to 95,606. The seven-day incidence has been rising continuously for two weeks. Last Friday, the value exceeded the 100 mark for the first time since May.

RKI warns of the increasing risk of contagious contacts

In view of the developments, the Robert Koch Institute warned in its weekly report of a growing risk of infection. “With the current seven-day incidences, there is an increasing likelihood of infectious contacts.” It is “strongly recommended” to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and to ensure that you are completely vaccinated.

What is meant is that you should also get the second injection, which is provided for almost all corona vaccines. The possibility of booster vaccination should be used by the groups to which the Standing Vaccination Commission recommends it, it said. If you have mild symptoms, you should stay at home and get tested, if possible with PCR, tweeted the RKI. This also applies to those who have been vaccinated.

“Pronounced effect” of vaccinations

Unnecessary contacts should be reduced and the rules of conduct for protection against infections should be strictly adhered to. The RKI notes that the proportion of people who have been vaccinated has hardly increased in the past few weeks. Citing own calculations, it was said that a “pronounced effect” of the corona vaccination to prevent Covid-19 diseases and hospital admissions in Germany has been proven.

The RKI compared the respective incidences in the unvaccinated and the fully vaccinated population. Result: In the vaccinated population, both the weekly incidence of cases with symptoms and the incidence of hospital admissions were well below the respective values of the unvaccinated population, it said. This applies to the two age groups analyzed (18 to 59 and from 60 years of age) and to the entire study period from mid-July to mid-October.

High Corona Incidents in Bavaria

Rising incidences in all age groups

Regarding the general corona situation, the report says that the rising trend of seven-day incidences became visible in all age groups last week. Abrupt increases also affect the elderly – in people over 90, the seven-day incidence rose from 63 to 108 in a weekly comparison. There has been another significant increase in outbreaks in old people’s and nursing homes and medical facilities, it said. “This year’s case numbers are significantly higher than in the same period last year.” The RKI has been emphasizing since summer that it is expecting increasing numbers for autumn and winter.

The Marburger Bund doctors’ union once again warned of drastic bottlenecks in hospitals, as in previous high phases of the pandemic. “I do not want to experience again that operations have to be canceled because of Covid-19, because otherwise the supply cannot be managed,” said chairwoman Susanne Johna to the newspapers of the Funke media group.

The President of the Intensive Care Medical Association, Gernot Marx, assumes that all patients could be fully cared for. “But operations are being canceled again and nursing staff must be withdrawn from other areas,” he told the editorial network in Germany.

Baden-Württemberg shortly before warning level

Baden-Württemberg is already calculating in the coming days with the fact that the number of corona intensive care patients exceeds the mark of 250. If this happens on two consecutive working days, the nationwide warning level with restrictions for unvaccinated and non-convalescents comes into force. These would then be subject to contact restrictions and would have to show PCR tests in many areas.

Health Minister Manfred Lucha recently said that unvaccinated people are “responsible for around 80 percent of infections and thus of course also for the tense situation in the intensive care units”. He thinks it is possible that restrictions could induce people to get vaccinated.

Martin Stürmer, virologist, on the high corona incidences

Morning magazine, October 29, 2021

Virologist expects more vaccine breakthroughs

The virologist Martin Stürmer spoke of a “communicative problem” in view of the increasing number of vaccination breakthroughs. “We did not assume that we would achieve 100 percent sterile immunity,” he told im ARD morning magazine. Vaccination breakthroughs were expected. With the high number of cases, this will be seen more often in the future.

However, it is wrong to argue that it is not worth getting vaccinated if you could still be infected later, said Stürmer. In the case of vaccinated people, the situation is completely different. “Firstly, the likelihood of being infected again is significantly reduced. Then the likelihood of having a severe course or even dying and also passing the virus on to others is significantly reduced. In this respect, you have a very, very big advantage for yourself and for others if you get vaccinated. ” In the risk groups, countermeasures must be taken with a third vaccination.
