In 2021, almost 1,540 farms in Germany will be cultivating a tree nursery area of 17,160 hectares. Compared to the last survey in 2017, the area used decreased by 7.8% and the number of tree nurseries by 10.4%. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the average area cultivated by a tree nursery remains unchanged at around 11 hectares. 98.2% of the nursery area is in the open, 1.8% in greenhouses or under high protective cover.

The nursery crops include ornamental shrubs and trees, hedge plants, forest plants, fruit trees, roses and other crops such as conifers for growing Christmas trees. The cultivation of ornamental shrubs and trees accounts for 43% of the tree nursery area outdoors: 1,160 farms will use a total of 7 230 hectares for this in 2021 (-9.3% compared to 2017). The cultivation of ornamental shrubs and trees is thus by far the most important group in the cultivation spectrum of German tree nurseries, ahead of the cultivation of hedge plants with 2,080 hectares and the cultivation of forest plants with 2,020 hectares. The largest proportion of the young plants for ornamental shrubs and trees is accounted for by the cultivation of deciduous and coniferous trees, for example for avenues, streets and parks with 2,930 hectares (-14.4% compared to 2017).

While the area for growing hedge plants was only slightly expanded compared to 2017 (+1.6%), the area for young plants for forest planting increased by 10.6%. Most of the tree nurseries with 399 businesses and an area of 4 790 hectares are located in Lower Saxony, which corresponds to 27.9% of the total German tree nursery area. This is followed by the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia (289 farms and 3 270 hectares) and Schleswig-Holstein (224 farms and 3 010 hectares).
