The winners of the German Occupational Safety and Health Award 2021 have been announced. As part of the leading trade fair for safety and health at work A + A, the independent jury honored five winners this year, including two small businesses, two medium-sized companies and one large company. For the seventh time since 2009, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS), the State Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (LASI) and the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) are organizing this cross-sector competition. As a long-term cooperation partner, Messe Düsseldorf has also donated an additional category for newcomers to the industry this year. In total, prize money totaling 50,000 euros was awarded.

Exemplary companies deal proactively and effectively with the challenges of safe and healthy workplaces. The award under the umbrella of the Joint German Occupational Safety and Health Strategy has now been presented to five of these role models.

In the “Strategic” category: LyondellBasell AG

Every 4 to 5 years, the global plastics, chemical and refinery company LyondellBasell shuts down entire plants in order to check them for safety. With these large-scale stoppages, up to 150 different companies with around 2,000 employees can be found at the locations at peak times. At the Wesseling site, all service providers must prove their theoretical and practical expertise in exam situations with the specifics of the respective trades in advance. Only those who pass these qualification tests receive the necessary ID card. In this way, the company increases the overall security of all systems.

In the “Business” category: Altendorf GmbH

With their “Hand Guard” project, Altendorf GmbH from Minden has developed an assistance system that detects dangerous situations on the circular saw at an early stage and switches the machine off immediately – even if the hand approaches very quickly. In contrast to previous safety systems, the person can then continue working on the saw after a simple confirmation. In addition, all near-accidents can be evaluated using the camera technology. After extensive coordination with the professional association for wood and metal, the system was approved for use. The first machines equipped with it are already in trial operation with test customers.

In the “Cultural” category: Tierpark Bochum gGmbH

Tierpark Bochum gGmbH has introduced a management system for safety and health prevention at work to protect employees. The exemplary system for German zoos integrates individual risk analyzes, qualification measures, personal protective equipment and effectiveness controls into a coherent multimodal safety concept.

In the “Personal” category: Harald Gerjet’s master interior decorator

The delivery and installation of awnings and sun protection systems are associated with a high potential for back-stressing movements and the risk of falls. Master interior decorator Harald Gerjets from Aurich, together with some employees, developed aids that noticeably facilitate loading and unloading as well as assembly and at the same time minimize the risk of falling.

In the “Newcomer” category – as a foundation award from Messe Düsseldorf: WandelWerker Consulting GmbH

Anna and Stefan Ganzke from Wuppertal advise companies on occupational safety issues. They have been publishing the “WandelWerker Podcast” since April 2020 – so far, over 80 episodes of the key discussions have come together and have been listened to around 28,000 times. The episodes appear on Sundays and can be subscribed to on all common platforms. For example, they provide information on topics such as safe behavior in the workplace, the further development of a safety culture and the implementation of protective measures.

In addition, there was one among all nominees Audience award for which the visitors to the website of the German Occupational Safety and Health Award could vote in advance of the award ceremony. The most votes received Mercedes-Benz AG at the Sindelfingen location and was able to receive a voucher for participation in a specialist seminar of the Institute for Work and Health of the DGUV in Dresden.

TV presenter and journalist Corinna Lampadius led through the festive award ceremony as part of the A + A occupational health and safety fair. For the first time, the award ceremony was also broadcast via live stream.

The jury examined a total of 176 submissions, 13 of which were nominated for the German Occupational Safety and Health Award 2021 based on the following criteria:

Effective: The solution is goal-oriented in terms of its content and measurable in terms of success

Transferable: The solution is a role model and inspires without having to be a blueprint

Consistent: The solution is resource-saving and designed and implemented for long-term use

Creative: The solution is simply ingenious or simply ingeniously developed or implemented

The German Occupational Safety and Health Award is part of the Joint German Occupational Safety and Health Strategy (GDA). Under the umbrella of the GDA, the BMAS, the LASI and the DGUV combine their activities relating to occupational health and safety. The official cooperation partners of the German Occupational Safety and Health Award are Messe Düsseldorf and the Federal Association for Safety and Health at Work (Basi).
