Successful citizens’ initiative “Save bees and farmers” hands over 450,000 signatures to members of the coalition negotiations

Location: Place in front of the Paul-Löbe-Haus, Konrad-Adenauer-Straße 1, 10557 Berlin

Time: Tuesday, November 2, 2021, 9-10 a.m.

450,000 German citizens have the successful European citizens’ initiative “Save bees and farmers!” signed and thus voted for a bee-friendly, pesticide-free agriculture in Europe.

On Tuesday, November 2nd, 2021, representatives of the citizens’ initiative will hand over the votes collected in Germany to members of the coalition negotiations. Numerous environmental and nature conservation associations as well as civil society organizations, including the BUND, Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Campact, the Munich Environmental Institute, the Aurelia Foundation and the Alliance for Agriculture Appropriate for Grandchildren have supported the citizens’ initiative.

The representatives of the citizens’ initiative criticize the fact that central agricultural and environmental policy issues such as the protection of biodiversity and a sustainable transformation of agriculture have not been sufficiently taken into account in the exploratory paper of the SPD, Greens and FDP. That is why they appeal to the negotiating parties to support the strong vote of German citizens for the EU citizens’ initiative “Save bees and farmers!” and to include their demands in the coalition agreement.

In the run-up to the signature handover, there will be a protest and opportunities for press photos. To illustrate the dramatic loss of biodiversity, the organizations will let a huge, dead bee hover in the air in front of the Paul Löbe House.

We cordially invite you as a press representative.

Background: The European citizens’ initiative “Save bees and farmers” has successfully collected a total of 1.16 million signatures. Around 450,000 of the signatures collected come from Germany. The initiative calls for the EU Commission to gradually phase out pesticides by 2035, measures to promote biodiversity and more support for farmers in switching to pesticide-free, ecological agriculture.
