▷ “Bach’s Messiah” compact: world premiere exclusively at MDR

Leipzig Bach Festival director Michael Maul has put together a two-hour short version of the 16-hour cycle “Bach’s Messiah” from concert recordings from this year’s Bach Festival especially for MDR KLASSIK – it can be viewed and heard online from today (October 28) at mdr-klassik.de on Reformation Day, October 31, from 7.30 p.m. on MDR KLASSIK and MDR KULTUR on the radio.

Bach Festival director Michael Maul has a two-hour short version of the twelve concerts that were performed at this year’s Bach Festival on five consecutive days and in which 33 selected Bach cantatas, the St. Matthew Passion as well as Ascension, Easter and Christmas oratorios were played compiled on the basis of the concert recordings. The life of Jesus of Nazareth from his birth through the crucifixion to the Ascension is thus traced in the guise of Bach’s music, combined with newly produced readings from the New Testament in Martin Luther’s translation. The short version of “Bach’s Messiah” can now be seen and heard for the first time and exclusively at MDR KULTUR and MDR KLASSIK.

Framed by choirs, chorales, arias and recitatives from cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, the actor Frank Arnold as evangelist leads through the plot, in which Bach Festival director Michael Maul looks at the Jesus biography of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. oriented. Musical interpreters include the Thomanerchor Leipzig and the ensembles of Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki, Hans Christoph Rademann and Vaclav Luks. The recordings come from concerts from June 11th to 15th, among others in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and the Nikolaikirche. Some concert excerpts can be seen publicly for the first time.
