In the finals, “Reporter / Refugee” from Tondowski Films from Mühlenberge won the 10th ARD documentary film competition. The idea was convincing with its current and above all socially relevant topic – the coming to terms with the crimes against the Syrian people.

In “Reporter / Refugee” a Syrian journalist who lives as a refugee in Germany reports on the world’s first trial against two members of the Syrian regime for crimes against humanity. One of the victims is the journalist herself.

“‘Reporter / Refugee’ deals with a highly relevant political topic with a particularly unique perspective that is deliberately chosen subjectively,” the jury explains its decision. “It’s about justice and a landmark court decision.”

Jury chairman Oliver Köhr: “The winning project of the 10th ARD documentary film competition thus combines everything that makes an award-winning documentary film.”

The director of “Reporter / Refugee”, Adithya Sambamurthy, is overwhelmed: “To be honest, I am still a little speechless. But this decision is extremely important for us because it shows that ARD has confidence in our project. We are also with us the production funding in a completely different situation. We can use it to finish the film in the next nine, ten months. We are over the moon! ”

Production cost subsidy and broadcasting space in Erste and in the ARD media library

The participating broadcasters of the ARD initiative – in addition to the MDR, these are BR, NDR, SWR, WDR and rbb – enable the implementation of the award-winning project by assuming production costs of up to 250,000 euros. In addition, the film is waiting for a slot on the First German Television and a publication in the ARD media library.

That was the 10th ARD documentary film competition

From the 40 submissions, the jury – consisting of representatives of the broadcasting companies involved and headed by ARD editor-in-chief Oliver Köhr – nominated five projects for the final. We were looking for a creative and innovative documentary highlight. The range of topics this year ranged from space to racism to football. The five selected producers presented their concepts and trailers for their 90-minute film project at a pitch on October 27th.

In addition to “Reporter / Refugee”, these were: “The 103 from Eberswalde” from DOKfilm Fernsehproduktion from Potsdam, “The Miracle from Köpenick – Union” from IT Works! Medien from Berlin, “Weltraumfieber 2.0” from Timeline Film + TV from Frankfurt / Main and “The Dark Side of the Boom” from zischlermann filmproduktion from Berlin.
