In private and later leaked statements by Dr. Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer SE and President of the Federal Association of Digital Publishers and Newspaper Publishers (BDZV), has met with some massive criticism, including from within the association. Against this background, the presidium of the BDZV will deal with the allegations and has announced that it will discuss this topic in more detail in a face-to-face meeting on November 24, 2021. Corresponding discussions are currently also being held in the regional associations.

In a private SMS in connection with fighting the pandemic, Mathias Döpfner drew a comparison with the “GDR authoritarian state” and described the journalists as “propaganda assistants”. This has led to clear criticism from publishing houses and the media.

Mathias Döpfner made it clear in Berlin today: “For thirty years I have been campaigning for critical, independent journalism every day. It would be bitter if this were turned into the opposite by a private message to a friend that arose out of the emotion. For everyone who feel hurt by this, I would like to apologize. The way my statements in the SMS are now interpreted, they were never meant. ”
