At the 6th ARD program workshop on the future of documentary productions on October 27th, representatives of ARD and producers of documentary formats will again be in an exchange – just a few days after the ARD program reform was announced.
For the 6th time the “ARD program workshop for the future of documentary productions” is taking place in Leipzig. For the first time in a direct exchange, this time the main focus is on strengthening the documentary within the framework of the ARD program reform. Producers from all over Germany will discuss the upcoming challenges and tasks as well as the growing importance of the ARD media library, socially relevant topics and the new creative scope at the forum together with those responsible for ARD. The opening panel is dedicated to the truthfulness and credibility of documentary productions.
ARD film director Karola Wille (MDR) emphasized in her welcoming speech how important this process is: “With our digital conversion we also want to sharpen our profile. Documentations with journalistic excellence are of great importance and are therefore in the ARD media library and expanded in the first. Documentary productions in particular stand for authenticity, the illumination of our social reality and depth of field. ”
In the digital world, new possibilities would open up in order to be able to depict the diversity of our society even better. “Together with the producers, we want to discover these possibilities and design them creatively,” continues Wille.
ARD editor-in-chief Oliver Köhr emphasizes: “With the program reform, ARD is strengthening its information competence and relevance. Documentation is a key component of this reform, among other things, investigative documentaries are to be offered in the ARD media library once a month. The program workshop on the future of documentary productions comes at just the right time. ”
The realignment and the reform package have met with a positive response from producers and associations. “Linked to this is a strengthening of the documentary in the linear as well as in the non-linear way of playing. We hope that this will not only improve the visibility of documentary content, but also strengthen our diverse and independent production landscape,” said the two chairmen of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Dokumentarfilm eV, Susanne Binninger and David Bernet. And further: “For us, the program workshop is a laboratory in which broadcasters and producers think together about how digital change can be shaped. We see real opportunities for innovations here, because creative documentary productions can be tried out in the media libraries that go beyond the known formatting. ”
Dagmar Biller, chairman of the DOKU section at the Producers Alliance, is also optimistic: “This year’s ARD program workshop in Leipzig has its sights set on setting the course for the future. A challenge for everyone involved, because ARD and producers want to realize documentary productions together that will continue to reach as many people as possible in the future. The comprehensive reform for Das Erste and the ARD Mediathek is an opportunity to break new ground. While producers are required to fill the program reform with life, ARD must succeed in In times of constant budget pressure to bundle resources in such a way that real competition with streaming providers is possible. ”
The ARD Program Workshop
As always, the “ARD program workshop on the future of documentary productions” will take place parallel to DOK Leipzig, the world’s oldest documentary film festival. The main topics this year are serial documentary storytelling, the importance of knowledge (science) journalism in the ARD, diversity and reaching young target groups through FUNK and the young offers.
Producers of documentary formats from all over Germany take part in the workshop discussions together with program managers from the ARD state broadcasters. The workshops, which have been held annually since 2016, are intended to offer exchange and discussion on an equal footing and are therefore prepared and moderated together with the responsible ARD editors – as well as representatives of the producers’ associations AG DOK and the Documentation section of the producer alliance.
