The hospitals in Russia are reaching their limits: The 292,000 hospital beds for corona patients are 90 percent occupied. The state is trying to get the situation under control with cash injections and days off.
In view of the dramatic pandemic situation in Russia, more and more hospitals are reaching their limits. Around 90 percent of the beds created for corona patients are occupied, said Health Minister Michail Muraschko, according to the Interfax agency.
In some regions, capacities have been increased again. Nationwide, 292,000 hospital beds would be available, six percent more than a week earlier. Every tenth patient is in serious condition.
According to Prime Minister Mikhail Mischustin, the equivalent of 693.9 million euros will be invested in combating the pandemic – for example to create more hospital beds in particularly affected regions. “The main task is to protect the lives of our citizens as well as possible,” he said.
Regions should go into lockdown
In order to contain the spread of the virus, President Vladimir Putin ordered a non-working period from October 30 to November 7. During this time, most government organizations and private companies will cease operations. Most shops, kindergartens, schools, gyms and most entertainment facilities will be closed.
Restaurants and cafes will only be open for take-away or delivery orders. Grocery stores, pharmacies and companies important to the infrastructure can remain open. Local authorities were instructed to tell unvaccinated residents over the age of 60 not to leave the home. The mask requirement in public transport and in closed rooms, which has so far only been loosely complied with, is to be enforced more strictly.
Putin has now encouraged the hardest-hit regions to start work-free time earlier and possibly also to extend it. Six of Russia’s 85 regions stopped working on Monday, and more were added today.
The Kremlin sees the low vaccination rate as the main reason for the infection situation. According to statistics, only a third of the population is fully vaccinated. The daily number of corona deaths in Russia has now reached a new high. The national coronavirus task force reported 1,106 deaths within 24 hours. The Ministry of Health announced that more than 1.3 million people are currently ill.
