Bundesliga: Kohfeldt is the new coach in Wolfsburg

Status: 10/26/2021 6:06 p.m.

Florian Kohfeldt is the new coach of the Bundesliga soccer club VfL Wolfsburg. The club announced on Tuesday. The 39-year-old will receive a contract with the Lower Saxony until 2023.

Kohfeldt succeeds Mark van Bommel, who was given leave of absence from the “Wolves” last Sunday after the defeat against Freiburg. The 39-year-old takes over the Champions League participant in a deep earnings crisis. The ninth player from Wolfsburg has not won eight competitive games in a row.

Kohfeldt, who will lead training at VfL for the first time on Thursday and will then be officially presented, is considered an empathetic expert and friend of offensive football. Unlike the last time at Werder, he would have the opportunity to play his favorite style with the well-filled Wolfsburg squad. In addition, Kohfeldt has a reputation for being good at dealing with young players.

“There is a lot of quality and dynamism in this team and we will now work together to bring them back onto the pitch.”

Kohfeldt: “I didn’t have to think twice about it”

“I didn’t have to think twice about accepting this challenge. It’s an exciting job that I’m really looking forward to,” said Kohfeldt, who was relieved of his duties at Werder last May despite a contract until 2023. “I’m going to use the short time until the next game to have a lot of conversations and get a first overview.” VfL competes at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday (3:30 p.m., in the NDR Live Center).

Schäfer: “We had a lot of conversations”

“In the past few hours we have had a lot of discussions and made a selection of possible candidates. We are happy that we were able to reach an agreement with Florian Kohfeldt and are convinced that he can identify with our path and that we can get back on the road to success with him will return, “said VfL sports director Marcel Schäfer.

Promoted to Bremen and later on leave

Kohfeldt was promoted to head coach at Bremen in November 2017. He had previously worked for the North German team as a youth trainer and assistant. In his first season he saved Werder from relegation, in the following season Kohfeldt narrowly missed the international places with the green-whites. He was named Trainer of the Year 2018 by the Association of German Football Teachers.

The positive development did not continue in Bremen, however. In the 2019/2020 series, the North Germans only secured the class in the relegation. After the 33rd matchday of last season, when Werder was in 16th place in the table, Kohfeldt had to leave. Shortly afterwards, the Bremen relegated to the second division.
