Berlin – Without reforms, the statutory pension insurance is heading for a “financial shock”, according to the pension expert Axel Börsch-Supan. The scientist and political advisor warned the SPD, FDP and Greens against leaving everything as it is when it comes to pensions. “In the next three or four years the baby boomers will retire, which means there will be more than three million new pensioners,” said Börsch-Supan, who is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Ministry of Economics, the Tagesspiegel (Tuesday edition). “If you leave everything as it is, it has to be financed somehow.”

In the exploratory paper, the possible traffic light coalition agreed that there should be no pension cuts and that the statutory retirement age should not be raised. In order to finance the increasing expenditure of the pension insurance, however, either the pension contributions or the tax subsidies would have to skyrocket in the future, emphasizes Börsch-Supan, the director of the Munich Center for the Economics of Aging at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy (MEA) is. That affects the boys. “Most of the contributors are young people, and so are the taxpayers,” the pension expert points out. “The exploratory paper is a clear message: we are going to protect the elderly and the young have to pay for it.”

The pension expert also considers the idea of the SPD, FDP and the Greens to invest part of the pension contributions in the capital market to be wrong at this point in time. “You can’t jump as big as you are now,” he said. The younger generation would then have to pay twice. “She has to finance the pay-as-you-go system for her parents and grandparents and at the same time build up a capital stock for herself.” Because of the associated burdens, such a reform would therefore be carried out in times when there were many young people and few older people. “But we are in the opposite position,” criticized the expert.
