Successful start for the 5G model test in Hamburg. On Tuesday, October 26th, NDR and Media Broadcast put a 5G broadcast network into operation at the Hamburg-Moorfleet and Heinrich-Hertz-Turm stations. Various live and test content is broadcast on K34 (578 MHz), which is generated in the playout center of the NDR in Hamburg-Lokstedt. Market-ready receivers for this broadcast technology, which was only recently specified as part of the 5G mobile communications standard, are not yet available for purchase.

The pilot project initiated by NDR and carried out in cooperation with Media Broadcast is planned for the end of 2023. It is intended to provide important insights into the performance of this new broadcast technology, in which the locations and frequencies of broadcasting can be used in order to reach mobile devices over a large area – even in rural areas. Future smartphones can do this, but B. also be self-driving vehicles with their displays.

In the model test, the propagation and reception conditions of 5G broadcast are analyzed using various parameters and then used for frequency and transmitter network planning. Building on this, content-related offers are to be tested and application examples developed. A close exchange with manufacturers and other 5G broadcast projects in Europe is sought.

“It is a fascinating idea that, on the basis of the 5G standard, we will in future be focusing on radio technology with its strengths in the dissemination of massively attractive programs such as sports reporting with mobile technology and its strengths in the mobile on-demand use of media content with one end device. This is new and opens up a wide range of possibilities for interesting offers that are tailored to the increasingly mobile use, “says Dr. Uwe Ladebusch, Head of the Central Tasks Program Distribution Department at NDR.

“5G broadcast as a possible technology, in particular to simplify the reception of linear TV on mobile devices, is an exciting field for us. Carrying out this model test is particularly important with regard to the future use of the ultra-high frequency spectrum for broadcast applications important project for us “, adds Verena Schmitz, Head of Strategy at Media Broadcast.
