Zurich, March 23 / PRNewswire /)

With the introduction of HeiQ AeoniQ – a high-performance cellulose yarn based on a new fiber made from carbon-negative materials – HeiQ announces a potential turning point for the textile industry. This new fiber, made from third generation cellulosic biopolymers, is on the way to pilot production before it hits the market on a large scale. The LYCRA Company is HeiQ’s first development partner.

Whether cotton, wool or synthetic polymers – global textile production has a significant impact on the environment, as the industry is responsible for more than 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and over 20% of global wastewater1. Conventional production of cellulosic fibers consumes arable land as it grows and has limited design variety, while the raw materials for synthetic fossil-based materials are finite. The existing processes for recycling textiles and garments from all fibers are largely immature, and most fibers – whether synthetic or natural – take many years to degrade in landfills or in the oceans, causing environmental pollution.

HeiQ AeoniQ cellulose yarn made from climate-friendly raw materials

HeiQ AeoniQ yarns (Aeon: striving for eternal circularity) are made from cellulosic biopolymers that bind carbon from the atmosphere while growing and at the same time generate oxygen. This high-performance yarn is able to replace synthetic filament yarns, which account for more than 60% of the world’s annual textile production of 108 million tons.2 Compared to conventional cellulose products, the production of HeiQ AeoniQ yarns does not require any arable land, pesticides or fertilizers.

HeiQ AeoniQ yarns are designed for the cycle concept and can be recycled several times while maintaining the same fiber quality. The manufacturing process is said to use 99% less water than cotton yarns, and HeiQ AeoniQ is said to offer comparable performance properties as polyester, nylon and conventional yarns made from regenerated cellulose.

Invitation of first-time users

HeiQ’s leading industry experts are ready to help the first HeiQ AeoniQ yarns from the pilot production facility in the second quarter of 2022 to deliver. In view of the outstanding qualities, the unique decarbonization potential and the outstanding ESG properties3, HeiQ a maximum of 20 brand partners geared towards sustainability to be the first to market products made from this trend-setting yarn.

The LYCRA Company as the primary development partner

HeiQ announces that The LYCRA Company, with its prestigious brand collection, global retail customer network and fabric innovation capabilities, will be a primary apparel development partner for HeiQ AeoniQ yarns with an exclusivity for stretch and performance fabrics. The LYCRA Company has a complete range of certified, sustainable products and is continuously expanding this range through the development of new LYCRA® fiber types. These fibers have the potential to be combined with HeiQ AeoniQ yarn to create unique decarbonizing and degradable elastic fabrics.

Carlo Centonze, co-founder and CEO of the HeiQ Group, explained: “Climate change needs new inventions. By introducing HeiQ AeoniQ yarn to the textile industry, we will reduce our dependence on petroleum-based fibers, contribute to the decarbonization of our planet and reduce the industry’s impact on climate change. Our yarn is a versatile alternative to polyester , Nylon and even ordinary cellulosic fiber and therefore has enormous potential to transform the industry. By wearing clothing made from HeiQ AeoniQ, consumers can help reduce the levels of carbon in our atmosphere. Adoption by billions of people has the potential Trapping hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. A fight worth fighting. “

Julien Born, CEO von The LYCRA Company, explained: “As our future corporate strategy focuses on sustainable solutions for the textile industry, we are proud to work with HeiQ on both the technical development and marketing of this fiber. The industry is ready for innovations such as HeiQ AeoniQ, and by combining ours Skills with HeiQ’s are really well placed to learn quickly and to maximize the enormous potential of this new technology. “

Martin Gebert-Germ, an expert in viscose filament yarn with 30 years of experience in the textile industry, stated: “This technology is the turning point for the entire textile industry.” Mr. Gebert-Germ will join the newly founded HeiQ GmbH Austria as CEO and head the HeiQ AeoniQ business from November 2021.
