World Travel Award, 14th this year
More than 1 million visitors are expected this year
The Maldives was selected in four categories at the ‘World Travel Awards 2021’ in the Indian Ocean region: ▲Best travel destination ▲Best beach destination ▲Best diving destination ▲Best Tourism Authority.
Thoyyib Mohamed, Commissioner of the Maldives Tourism Authority, said, “Despite the pandemic that has put the travel industry at risk worldwide, the reason why it was selected as the best travel destination in the Indian Ocean is thanks to the unsparing efforts of the Maldives travel industry workers and partners.” He added, “This year, I am even more honored to be awarded the ‘Best Indian Ocean Tourism Award’.” So far, the Maldives has been voted the best travel destination in the Indian Ocean 14 times.
With the peak season from November to December approaching, expectations are rising for the number of tourists to reach 1 million this year. The Maldives opened its borders on July 15 last year, and as of October 26, this year alone, the number of cumulative visitors reached 923,000. The Maldives Tourism Authority has conducted 25 travel exhibitions, 5 road shows, and 40 promotional and marketing campaigns in countries around the world to revitalize the Maldives tourism industry.
