The temporary closure of the brothels has led to an increase in illegal prostitution in Saxony-Anhalt. This is reported by the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung from Halle (Tuesday edition). According to brothel operators from Saxony-Anhalt, many women avoided private apartments during the ban on work in the corona pandemic and have been offering their services online since then. “The more is banned, the more they slide into illegality,” said Robert Frickinger, operator of the X-Carree in Halle, of the MZ.
Prostitutes have been able to work again since mid-May. The brothels were previously closed for over a year. The work ban put many prostitutes in dire straits, said Stephanie Klee, director of the Federal Association for Sexual Services, the MZ. They often worked in registered brothels and paid taxes there, but had no access to social benefits in Germany due to a lack of registered addresses or residence permits. “A great many emigrated. Otherwise they would have starved to death,” said Klee.
