Critics often compare the conservative Catholic community Opus Dei (God’s Work) to a sect. Opus Dei sees itself more as a growing community of faith in the service of Jesus Christ. A look inside is still difficult to this day. The 90,000 members worldwide tend to shy away from the public, dropouts feel obliged to remain silent and fear the consequences. The documentary “The Secrets of Opus Dei – Faith, Power, Manipulation” on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, 8:15 pm on ZDFinfo will answer the question of what is myth and what is reality about Opus Dei? Margot Litten’s film will be available from Tuesday, October 26, 2021, 5 p.m. in the ZDFmediathek.
In Spain, the country of origin of Opus Dei, parts of the judicial and educational sectors have been infiltrated by members of Opus Dei since the time of Franco. In Rome, the “work of God” strengthened in such a way that the elections of the Pope could be influenced to one’s own advantage. And even if the tone of its appearance became more conciliatory, Opus Dei still strives to occupy key positions in politics and society – with Catholics who are more than suited to the Opus.
The documentation tries to make these connections in Spain and Germany transparent, and allows those affected and experts to have their say – including Christoph Bockamp, the head of Opus Dei in Germany.
