Thuringia’s Minister of Health Heike Werner (left) defends the state government’s approach to the corona pandemic against “nd.Der Tag”. “From our point of view, it is not helpful to increase the pressure on people who have not yet been vaccinated. We have learned that in the past few months,” said the minister. “If you increase the pressure, it doesn’t automatically mean that people do what you expect them to do. On the contrary. Perhaps that’s something specifically East German, something that has to do with the experience of the fall of the Wall.” In the Corona policy, explained Werner, it is important to weigh between three factors: “What is the burden of disease? How is the burden on the health system?” And further: “What does the restriction of fundamental rights and freedoms mean?”

The seven-day incidence in the Free State is currently 219.7 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants (as of Sunday) within one week. This is the highest value nationwide. The proportion of Covid-19 patients in occupant intensive care beds also climbed to 6.7 percent on Friday and was above the critical threshold of 6.0 percent for the third day in a row.
