Soccer Bundesliga: Mainz in goal frenzy against Augsburg

Status: 10/22/2021 10:25 p.m.

In a duel between two ailing Bundesliga clubs, 1. FSV Mainz 05 literally tore FC Augsburg apart at times – also because the Augsburg defense was virtually non-existent.

It was 4: 1 (3: 0) at the end of the start of the 9th Bundesliga match day. With this, the Rheinhessen ended their series of three defeats and initially climbed to sixth place in the table. Coach Markus Weinzierl’s team, on the other hand, is still waiting for the second win of the season and is stuck in the cellar.

Blackout from Gumny

“It will be a very, very difficult task,” Weinzierl had warned before the game. And was bitterly confirmed early on. In the 10th minute, the stormy and awake hosts used a blackout in the hyper-nervous Augsburg defense. Robert Gumny struck on his own sixteen over a cross pass from Silvan Widmer, Karim Onisiwo gratefully accepted the gift and finished halfway into the right corner (10th minute). Five minutes later things got even worse for the guests: After a quick switchover game, Jonathan Burkardt put the ball in front of Stefan Bell on the fiver and the defender overcame Rafal Gikiewicz with a tunnel (15th).

It continued with the refusal of the Augsburg defense to work: Onisiwo was hardly allowed to take off on the right side with a handicap, Burkardt headed his flank on the second post into the left corner (26th). A nightmare start for the FCA. The fact that it was not taken apart afterwards was primarily thanks to Augsburg goalkeeper Gikiewicz, who, when he was not defusing Mainz shots, was upset with words and gestures about the performance of his front men. Especially with the agile Onisiwo and Burkardt, the defensive of the FCA did not get along at all.

Weinzierl reacts and changes

Weinzierl reacted and sent in the second half for the unfortunate Gumny Tobias Strobl and for Sergio Córdova, who missed the game completely, Andi Zeqiri. The first actions of the second half belonged to the guests – but the Rheinhessen had the first big opportunity again. Once again Onisiwo stormed towards the goal of the FCA, but pushed the ball far past the left post (48th).

Since the Mainz team approached the action a little more relaxed and Augsburg looked a bit more stable, Weinzierl’s expression did not darken any further. After a dream pass from Daniel Caligiuri, Ruben Vargas even had the chance to catch up, putting his chip ball over the storming Robin Zentner – but also over the crossbar from 16 meters (56th). Zeqiri did better in the 69th minute when he extended a nice flat pass from André Hahn into the left corner – also a receipt for the Mainz administration mode.

Less than two minutes later, Burkardt put an end to the Augsburg hopes with his second goal. The U21 national player vigorously finished in the left corner from 16 meters – the cherry on top of Burkardt’s class performance (71st). The playfully strong and physically intense Rheinhessen then brought the game home with a smile and missed some great chances on the side.

Mainz now twice against Bielefeld

Mainz now meets Arminia Bielefeld twice in Folga – first on Tuesday (October 26th, 2021, 8.45pm) in the second DFB Cup round, then on Saturday at 3.30pm in the Bundesliga duel in Bielefeld. Augsburg is also still represented in the cup, playing at VfL Bochum on Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. The league home game against Stuttgart follows on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
