After one failure, he went on to challenge the southernmost tip of the country again.
The desire to reach the very end of our country is so strong.
One warm day at the border between winter and spring,
I took a walk around Marado.
The desire to reach the southernmost tip of the country
It is a port from which regular passenger ships depart for Unjin Port (Moseulpo South Port) and Marado in Seogwipo City, Jeju. There is also a ferry bound for Marado in nearby Songaksan Port (San-Isu-dong breakwater), but the regret of the first challenge that I turned away from due to the weather vividly recalls the challenge here. Yes. In order to stand at the southernmost tip of the country, you must also follow the weather luck. Although Marado is only 11km away from the main island of Jeju, it is a remote island that cannot be reached due to strong winds and waves.
Fortunately, weather luck followed. On a sunny and calm day like this, 25 minutes from Unjin Port to Marado is enough. 25 minutes go by quickly. As I was immersed in the scenery of Mt. Sanbang, Mt. Halla, and Brother Island, which were moving away from behind the ferry, a small island appeared above the water on the left side of the boat. it’s steep It is an island between the main island of Jeju and Marado, which is three times (0.9㎢) the size of Marado (0.3㎢), but it is still a small island and the highest height of the island (20.5m) is rather lower than that of Marado (39m), so it is close to the sea. lying face down. Gapado was also brief, and another island appeared faintly beyond it, and it became clearer and larger. Marado is the southernmost island in Korea.
Marado is 500m east-west and 1.3km north-south, and is vertically elongated. Some say it is shaped like a sweet potato, others say it is shaped like a mango, but whatever it is, the circumference is only 4.2km. Marado goes on an expedition. An hour to an hour and a half is enough to walk around Marado, either clockwise or vice versa along the village road. Therefore, the interval between round-trip boarding tickets is usually 2 hours and 30 minutes. It is a common pattern to spend an hour coming and going and then traveling around Marado for the remaining 1.5 hours.
Eat Totjjajangmyeon and explore Marado
Although it is a small island, there are many things to see and do, so I hurried my steps. After getting off at Saleduk Wharf, turn counterclockwise and the first thing you are greeted with is a row of jjajangmyeon restaurants. Marado and Jjajangmyeon became inseparable after TV commercials shouting ‘The one who ordered Jjajangmyeon~~’ became popular and celebrities who visited Marado in variety shows ate Jjajangmyeon. After eating turmeric jjajangmyeon and seafood jjamppong made topped with turmeric from Marado and various seafood, I feel excited and refreshed as if I had done some homework.
Now, just by walking along the road, you can meet the specialties of Marado one after another. It is a ‘house of a haenyeo’, a ‘home for natives’, a house from the TV program ‘Hundred Years Guest’, and many shops and restaurants are showing their faces. On the wide lawn in front of me, Gapa Elementary School Mara Branch School sits rustically. In the past, Marado belonged to Gapado, so Gapado and Marado are like brothers. It is said that the three major religions of Buddhism, Catholicism, and Christianity are gathered on this small island, and indeed the thief called ‘Giwonjeongsa’ comes out. There are also ‘Marado Church’ and ‘Marado Church’, so the remaining road is exciting. The southernmost point of the country has not yet appeared, so I can’t help but be more excited.
The highlight of the trip to Marado, the southernmost point of the country, is unpretentious. Without the monument engraved with ‘South Korea’s southernmost point’ in Chinese characters, it would have been just an ordinary beach, where travelers stand in line to take commemorative photos and celebrate the moment standing at the southernmost tip of Korea. The symbolism of being the southernmost land in Korea is so heavy. In front of a middle-aged couple gazing at the southern sea from the shelter behind the southernmost rain, a young couple puts a postcard in a ‘slow post box’ that they deliver in a year. A year from now, where will they travel?
Simple but heavy ‘the place’
If you have reached the southernmost point, you have seen half of the island. The other half is rather high. You have to climb a gentle uphill road, but in front of you, a cute building resembling a snail stimulates curiosity, so it’s not difficult. Marado Cathedral. It is said that the design embodies abalone, conch, and octopus, which are easily caught in Marado, and it resembles a snail.
A white lighthouse stands on the hill behind the cathedral. That is the highest point (39m) in Marado. Marado Lighthouse was first lit up in 1915, during the Japanese colonial period, and now serves as a photo zone for travelers. The coastal cliff in front of the lighthouse is called ‘Papillon Cliff’. Since it is the highest place in Marado, the cliff must also be the deepest, and it is because the black basalt cliff looks like a cliff in the movie ‘Papillon’. Ah, so there was a Papillon sculpture on the passenger ship… . find out later Standing on the cliff of Papillon, you can see Marado, the sea, and the main island of Jeju in the distance, offering a wonderful scenery. It is a fascinating landscape that even Papillon would never want to escape.
The ferry approaches the pier again. The footsteps of those who have completed their trip to the southernmost tip of the country and those who are now starting their journey intersect. Marado simply looks at the travelers who leave and come to visit, silently and heavily.
