The new Asterix adventure “Asterix and the Griffin” appeared in stores yesterday and made headlines. Today there is more news from the universe of the Gauls: The Asterix translator from the very beginning, Gudrun Penndorf, receives the German Youth Literature Prize 2021 in the category Special Prize Complete Works Translation at the Frankfurt Book Fair. With her, the special prize jury is honoring a translator of comic literature for her life’s work for the first time. The 83-year-old is delighted.

“It is a special honor and a great pleasure for me to receive this award after receiving the Federal Cross of Merit last year. This means that the comic type is once again positively in the limelight.”

Gudrun Penndorf lives in Munich and is a translator and interpreter for French and Italian. At the age of 40 she began to study general and Romance languages ​​and graduated with the Magister (M.A.) away. From 1967 to 1995 she worked as a freelance translator, primarily for Egmont-Ehapa-Verlag, the publisher of the classic comics Asterix, Lucky Luke, Isnogud and the Funny Paperback. For many years, Gudrun Penndorf was a lecturer and research assistant at the Institute for Romance Philology at the University of Munich and volunteered for projects aimed at integrating migrant women. In 2020 she received the Federal Cross of Merit.

Gudrun Penndorf belongs to the ranks of the most important German-speaking translators of the post-war period.
