Bund Deutscher Kriminalbeamter (BDK): Decriminalize cannabis use

Acting boss Dirk Peglow: Smoking weed should only be viewed as an administrative offense – demand for a test run for licensed sales outlets

Osnabrück. The Bund Deutscher Kriminalbeamter (BDK) is campaigning for an end to the cannabis ban. “We as an association want to decriminalize cannabis users,” said the acting BDK chairman Dirk Peglow in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Saturday). Owning a joint should only be punished with a fine. Peglow said, “We are demanding that consumption be viewed as an administrative offense and punished with a fine – such as driving my car too fast.” Portugal could be a role model. A commission of inquiry should determine the amount of the fine.

This means that the police are divided on the issue of cannabis legalization. The police unions GdP and DPolG had previously spoken out strictly against legalization.

In the opinion of the detectives, the possession of other drugs such as cocaine and heroin should only be classified as an administrative offense. “Of course you have to talk about the maximum levels, because we still advocate persecuting the illegal drug trade,” said Peglow. In Portugal, the maximum limit for cannabis is around 30 grams. This frees up staff, but also money that can be put into drug prevention.

The cannabis ban has grown historically and is now obsolete, said Peglow, who will run for federal chairman of the BDK at the upcoming Federal Delegate Day in November: “Now is the time to rethink that.” Despite decades of prohibition and police work, cannabis is being consumed more and not less: “We just have to face reality.”

The BDK is also committed to ensuring that consumers can legally buy cannabis in small licensed shops – the association is calling for model projects in Germany to test this. “These sales outlets should be allowed to sell cannabis to adults – of course not to young people,” Peglow told the NOZ. The employees would have to point out the risks of cannabis to the users: “Corresponding instructions for use must be provided, which are a kind of package insert in verbal form.” Experts should set the price for a gram of cannabis: “That should be in the range of 10 to 15 euros.”
