The Russian environmentalist and winner of the alternative Nobel Prize 2021, Vladimir Sliwjak, has called for his country to phase out nuclear energy. “I believe a Russia without nuclear power plants is possible,” said the co-founder of the environmental organization Ecodefense in an interview with the daily newspaper “nd.DerTag” (Friday edition).

There is not a single nuclear power plant in Siberia, but electricity and heating also work. “The moment now is good for switching to renewable energies,” said Sliwjak. As in the USA, numerous nuclear reactors in Russia would have to be shut down in the coming years because they are reaching the end of their service life, while at the same time hardly any new reactors would be built.
