Putin: President of Russia gives citizens a week of vacation to stop the pandemic

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave Russians a week’s paid vacation from October 30 to November 7 to stop the advance of the COVID-19 pandemic, which in the last 24 hours claimed the lives of more than a thousand people, while infections exceed 30 thousand cases daily.

“Now it is especially important to stop the peak of the new wave of the pandemic,” Putin said during a virtual meeting with the government on the health situation in the country.

Putin, who already imposed a similar measure at the beginning of the pandemic, thus supported the proposal presented by the Deputy Prime Minister, Tatiana Golíkova, who admitted that current measures “are not enough”.

Golíkova even raised with the president the possibility of declaring non-working hours in the regions most affected by the pandemic as of October 23.

Among them, he mentioned to several republics of the Caucasus like Dagestan, in addition to Tatarstan, the Siberian Tomsk or the peninsula of Kamchatka.

In this regard, Putin authorized the regional authorities both the declaration of vacation from next Saturday and its extension after November 7.

In addition, he called on the regions to not minimizing the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic in their territories and warned that these manipulations will finally come to light.

“In the current situation this is dangerous and irresponsible,” he warned.

Putin expressed his “perplexity” over the fact that Russians with higher education have not yet been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Russia once again registered a mortality record with 1,028 deaths on the last day.

The total number of deaths from COVID-19 stands at 225 thousand 353 so far as a pandemic, although official data on excess deaths in the same period tripled that number.

In addition, 34,073 new infections were registered in the 85 regions of the country. Most of the new infections were seen in Moscow (5,847), St. Petersburg (3,274) and the Moscow region (2,590).

Since the beginning of the pandemic Russia has identified eight million 094 thousand 825 cases of coronavirus, which makes that country the fifth in the world behind the United States, India, Brazil and the United Kingdom.
